CAVING IN THE HEARTLAND OF INDIANA KARST
The Central Indiana Grotto and the Harrison Crawford Grotto invite cavers to join us for the 20th annual Hogfest and the 54th annual Cave Capers combined event, May 4th- 6th at Fig Newton’s Farm, near Merengo, Indiana. The events are combined this year only, to clear the slate for the NSS Convention in Indiana this summer. Fig’s Farm is centrally located to a large number of vertical and horizontal caves on state, federal, and private lands, so plan to get down and dirty (or for the less ambitious, take in one of the nearby commercial caves). This is a RUSTIC campsite with no power or water available. Please bring your own water. Port-a-jons will be supplied.
Registration opens at noon Friday so come early and pick out your primitive camping spot at this spacious site, and then get a jump on going underground. Friday night, socialize and bring your guitar for a low profile open acoustic jam.
Caving will begin again early Saturday morning, with both volunteer-led trips and “go on your own with directions” excursions to some of Indiana’s finest caves, pits, and multi-drops. For non-cavers, there are nearby commercial caves Merengo Cave and Wyandotte Cave.
Saturday evening we will have a full schedule. This year we will be featuring a Hogfest traditional cookout for the low dough price of just $6.00. We are asking everyone to bring some slides or a CD of photos of your caving trips and projects. Sign up on the list and Slideshow Bob will put your media on the screen first come, first serve.
Sunday morning is time to plan a cave trip for the day and say good-bye to some of your old caver friends for another year.
