NORTHWEST CAVING ASSOCIATION 2007 REGIONAL MEET
Greetings cavers -
I'm pleased to announce that the Western Region has teamed up with the Northwest Caving Association (region) to combine Speleo-Ed 2007 with the NCA's annual meeting next spring. We will hold this dual event on May 18-20 at Lava Beds National Monument in northern California. The NCA includes grottos in Washington, Idaho, Utah, Oregon and British Columbia. The Western Region includes grottos in California, Nevada and Oregon.
Our combination of resources and members should make next spring's Speleo-Ed a great experience for all participants. While our activity schedule won't be finalized for another couple months, the events that are in development make this a must-do weekend for everyone.
Some of the sessions and workshops being planned include;
Making Simple Hydrologic Measurements in Caves
Introduction to Map and Compass
Cave Radio Location Workshop
Survey & Cartography Workshop
Multiple Photography Sessions & Workshops
Lava Beds Geology Field Trip
We have also teamed up with the NCRC folks to host a full-weekend Orientation to Cave Rescue for the park service and interested cavers. Participants from both the OCR and Speleo-Ed tracks will come together in the evenings for common social events including a fund-raising dinner for the Lava Beds Research Center, and, of course, Marianne Russo's ever-present Schnapps Tasting for the Western Cave Conservancy. Friday night's welcome party shouldn't be missed either. It's being planned as a "come as your favorite Lemurian" hosted beer and beverage party with an alien-summoning theme! (Confused? See links below.)
If that weren't enough, Shane Fryer at Lava Beds has recently announced discovery of the park's 600th cave! (or is it 700? I forget.) In any case, many of these caves are just minutes away from the campground and will be featured in several sessions and field trips during the weekend.
Of course, the entire event offers plenty of time to socialize with new and old friends from across the western states.
More information will be posted in early 2007, but please make sure you include this outstanding weekend on your grotto calendars and share this e-mail with your grotto lists.
May 18-20, 2007 at Lava Beds National Monument.
We hope you can join us!
Sincerely,
Matt Bowers
