Civilian Conservation Corps statueunveiled at Colossal Cave Mtn. Park Adam Bernal/Vail Sun Colossal Cave Mountain Park unveiled a new statue to honor the work of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) and recognize the public works services they performed as part of the 75th anniversary of the New Deal program established in the early 20th century. During the tough economic times that hit the United States shortly before World War II, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt established the New Deal to help jump-start the economy during one of the greatest economic depressions the country had ever seen. From 1933 to 1942, the government worked with communities on construction projects across the nation to provide money and much-needed jobs to stimulate local economies. Seventy-five years after the establishment of the New Deal, Colossal Cave Mountain Park, a CCC-constructed site, was chosen to receive a CCC worker statue as part of a nation-wide plan to have statues in all 50 states. The statue was brought in with the help of the CCC Legacy Chapter 44, a local chapter of the National Association of Civilian Conservation Corps Alumni and the contributions from Chapter 44 member Gerald Johnson.
