Bill could ease research institute fundraisingCarlsbad Current-Argus By Kyle Marksteiner 06/20/2008 CARLSBAD — A bill currently being examined in the United States Senate may make fundraising efforts easier for the National Cave and Karst Research Institute. The institute was created by Congress in 1998, but plans for a permanent facility in Carlsbad are still underway. The institute is jointly funded by the National Parks Service, the city of Carlsbad and New Mexico Tech. Karst is a type of topography that is characterized by closed depressions or sinkholes, caves and underground drainage. Senate Bill 3096 proposes an amendment to the National Cave and Karst Research Institute Act. Sen. Jeff Bingaman, D-N.M., sponsored the bill, and Sen. Pete Domenici, R-N.M., has also noted his support. The bill is presently being heard by the Energy and Natural Resources Committee, according to George Veni, the institute's executive director. Currently, the institute is required to receive non-federal funds to match the federal funding it is allocated. The proposed amendment would drop that requirement. Full Story
