Eureka Cave, McCreary County Kentucky
Leaving the house about 9 this morning driving about 40 miles to McCreary County, we ended up getting into the cave about noon.
I was a little worried this morning when my little one ,Shawn, started crying cause we wasn’t going to the cave that he thought. I told him the cave we are going to has all kinds of passages, this way and that way and this way and that way again. He got tickled and was ready to go check it out.
Ever since the latest Indian Jones movie he has been ready to go play in a cave. Most of the time we heard the little voice saying “Dun dun dun da, dun du du,” all the way through the cave.
When we arrived at the entrance to the cave we began the traverse below grade. This time the cave was a lot drier. We got to the first room and finished putting on our shirts and I put on my knee pads there. We began moving up the grade to our first crawl.
Excitement filled the air from the little guys that was anticipated what the crawl would be like. My brother David went on up ahead and got in position to take a few pictures of the boys. In we went and down the little hole at the end to the small room where we wait for the rest of the crew. Here we find another small hole which we will have to invert and go down head first. This was a challenge for someone of my stature. Here we find another little walk tunnel and traverse into the big room where we stop for a break.
We packed back up and started moving toward the passages around the north end of the big room. This was the beginning of the maze sections. These sections would go back and branch off and the branches, would branch off, and their branches would branch off again. Left, right, deeper and deeper, this cave is truly awesome. We just kept on moving and exploring different areas deeper and deeper.
We finally decided it was about time to head back out. Shawn wasn’t ready but the rest of us thought it time. We traversed back out and up the entrance to the upper side of the creek bed. The Cicada’s was singing so loud that it was almost annoying. Up to the trucks and back out to the local Burger King for some food before heading on home.
Hope you enjoyed, it was a wonderful trip.
