Finally, after years of waiting, the ancient underground Fontanelle Cemetery is open, after extensive restoration by the city of Naples, Italy. Visits to this mysterious place are by telephone reservation only. Reservations can be made by calling +390815490368 from Monday through Friday with calls taken only from from 10AM till noon. This morning we visited the newly opened site and took several new photos. You may see the photos and if you read Italian, our impressions as well, of the restoration of this ancient subterranean burial place. (I have not translated Fulvio's comments yet! ) At one time back in the 1950's, a city street car line ran out to the Fontanelle Cemetery to accommodate cult followers who adopt and care for the remains of those buried hundreds of years ago. If you have followed our numerous articles over the past months you will be pleased to know that the recently restored and cleaned underground, just opened to the public after being closed for many years, is a very popular destination. The Fontanelle cult cemetery was the most visited site in the city of Naples, Italy during the citywide "Monuments In May" celebration. While an actual visit to this incredible ancient cemetery is best, our Napoli Underground webmaster, Fulvio Salvi, has produced a modest video which you may download. Fulvio is a noted urban speleologist, and expert on the "Sottosuolo" or "underground" in the parallel city beneath Naples which he has explored for decades. The audio is in Italian, but you can make your own audio in your mind from the images presented. For a quick background in English . . . on this fascinating, macabre wonder beneath Naples, go to: www.napoli.com/english/sotterranea2.php and scroll down to the third article. To download Fulvio's video go to: The videoAgain, Fulvio is no Cecil B. DeMille, but his amateur video is certainly interesting and will give you a good look around inside this fascinating place that has been closed to the public for so long! Larry Ray

Napoli Underground Channel, the first streaming TV entirely dedicated to the speleological world, start to transmit the first movie with an english voice-over. The first movie " The Fontanelle Cemetery", due to the prof. Jeff Matthews voice... will allow the vision in foreign countries to know better the wonderful world of the underground of Naples. You'll can see the movie by clikking on the " ON-DEMAND" key in the " English voice over movies" category. As soon as possible we will add new movies. This is the link to see Napoli Underground ChannelWe hope you'll like it!

I can't thank you enough for posting and keeping us posted here at US Cavers Forum. It's been a lot of fun watching your discoveries unfold before our eye's. Adding English to it is the icing on the cake.

Hi Dan, and all out friends!
This is Larry Ray who does the translating for our friend Fulvio. As you may have noticed we have been in the hair-pulling process of migrating all the old data over to the new Joomla-powered, modernized web site. I hope to get back in the groove translating articles that have to do directly with the Naples area and the astounding underground world that honeycombs the entire area. I have greatly appreciated comments on U.S. Caving Forum about our articles over the years. I am located in South Mississippi, but lived in Naples and have been captivated by Naples' "Sottosuolo" or underground for more than 40 years. As we get a handle on the new site we hope to continue to share new discoveries with you all! Our wishes for a good new year for all.
Larry Ray
