I couldnt find where i was reading this earlier in a discussion about the death on Mt thor. But you should do some research on Mt Huashan in China if you want to break a mile. I think it might be possible there. I think you could scout it from the cable car though you would probably need a helicopter to find the best and safest drop because of the trees and foilage in the cliff walls. There is a buddist temple there though it is said that some chinese guys climbed it so im sure you could get permission if you handled it with care. The pictures make it look like one mile may be possible. I always wanted to do a mile but i dont have the money or the time so good look. let me know what you think. here is one link. the pictures going around in emails are even better. club.pchome.net/topic_2_4_80065__.html

I am getting a nosebleed just from looking at the pictures! That's one wild high alttitude tourist trap. I agree it looks high enough to be a contender is not a record breaker as far as rappels go. Thanks for the links to both photo sites. Very entertaining. PS: I can't figure out what all the padlocks are for??

Good grief! Those are some crazy tourists. I don't think you could pay me enough to do that climb. I hope they all made it.
Thanks for the links. Amazing.
Merry Christmas all.

I recognize half dome. How did you like the crack in the rock where you could see daylight thru as you stepped on out to put even more weight bisides the rope onto the overhanging rock.

Happy. are you talking front side or at the cables. We placed two bolts at the rig point. You've done the drop? Rebel

If you placed bolts you may have done another location. I think we had i plate rigged , not just bolts. But i cant remember. But from there the rope went over a large rock and as you were climbing over the rock you could see a long crack with about an inch gap and you could see all the way to the valley floor. It appeared that the large rock was sitting on a small ledge. It put a lump in your throat as you crawled on out to add your weight to the mix. Everyone noticed it but noone backed down though it was ever present on your mind during the ascent. I'll say this if you didnt notice it you went off at another location or the rock decided to go for a walk 10-4.

Roger that! We did back up to a big boulder but it was several feet from the edge.

It sounds like it could be the same spot. You had to lower yourself down till your feet were over your head and then drop your left foot and swing left because the rock was undercut on the left side. If you didnt see it perhaps i shouldnt have told you. That will be all you can think about next time. just remember if the boulder comes loose just try to get on top and ride it down.

you guys must have riggedthe rope off the "diving board" on the top of half dome....we rigged 50 to 100 feet to the left.......tied off to large boulders......
at el cap there is a rock that protrudes out from the lip, the last exfoliated boulder within a hundred feet each way that hasn't flaked off and fallen to the valley floor.....the last time i was there we had to rig the rope over that rock............
there doesn't appear to be a world record rap here unless the big wall long drop community is willing to embrace the concept of the JAY rappel. Mt. Huashan is a perfect candidate for establishing a new world record: but i do not see 3400 feet of freefall in any of the photos!!.....though there is plenty of distance for a wr steep-angle j rappel......
....a cablecar to the top...are you kidding me........what could be easier.......sum body contact me and agree to pay my airfare to china and back and i will commence to organizing and getting the necessary permission, i will do all that and handle sponsors etc...........i am not kidding............

Hey eyecave. If by diving board you mean the finger , then you went off at the same place as we did. I cant believe you didnt see the crack. You must have been awestruck by the view. 4700' above the valley floor will destract you a bit. You want believe it Rebel or eyecave , but when i was climbing up , i saw someone sitting on the overhanging finger with their feet swinging off the left side from climbing perspective. No safety just tourist. I dont think they realized how undercut that rock is.
