Just wondering if that disclaimer is still needed? "This forum is not sponsored or sanctioned by the National Speleological Society." If not, is it possible that it could be removed now?

I don't know if we can remove it or not. Some BOG members wanted the disclaimer on here and the name of the forum changed. Guess someone will have to ask them how long they want the disclaimer to remain. ;D

An afterthought: I've always assumed everyone already knew this, but in case someone doesn't, the National Speleological Society isn't the only organization that uses the acronym of NSS. Other entities own the domain names that use the NSS acronym. Namely www.nss.org/ and www.nss.com/ which I suspect is why the National Speleological Society uses the domain name of www.caves.org.

I agree Sharon. We changed the name of this forum and the official one is now up and running. I see no reason to keep the disclaimer up. We are all NSS Members after all. We are already guilty by association. Here's an idea. How about a forum topic specifically for non NSS cavers to discuss organizations outside the NSS? It could be for non affiliated NSS clubs to discuss things that have to do with caving in general. I'm not sure how much traffic it would receive, but it would be a nice jesture to those US cavers that are not NSS members.

It's fine by me if the disclaimer is removed. I trust we'll hear about it if anyone doesn't agree with our decision. ;D

Guess someone will have to ask them how long they want the disclaimer to remain. ;D Were some of the BOG just being anal again or what? ;D Ok, I may be wrong, but as I understand this, some of the NSS must have felt threatened or something by the existence of this forum. Therefore, the name of this forum was changed to U.S. Cavers Forum just to make some members of the NSS BOG and the Discussion Board ...ah....er...um... happy. I do not see that the new name U.S. Cavers Forum even gives a hints of a suggestion that the NSS might be sponsoring it. So I just fail to understand how BOG, the DB, or the National Speleological Society can even dictate that a disclaimer be in place on this forum? No other forum for cavers seems to have had that stipulation placed on their discussion forum. (?) So why are they dictating to just the U.S. Cavers Forum and do not seem to be dictating a disclaimer be placed on all the other caver type forums too?

As someone in an area with a LOT of non-NSS cavers, I like Dan's suggestion about a non-NSS caving discussion area.
Some of the NSS BNCs live in very NSS centric areas, and they cannot seem to wrap their minds around the concept that one can be conservation minded, very safe, and good for the caves, and yet not send your $$$ to Huntsville.
It's the caves that matter, after all, isn't it? By whatever means possible. I don't check people's cards or wallets. Just their words and actions.
I concur with dropping the disclaimer. This board seems to be more stable, anyway. I've had some difficulty getting to their forum via Netscape.

Over the years I have met many cavers who are conservation minded but are not members of the NSS.

A Non-NSS Caving Organizations discussion section has been created.
