The Colorado NSS2011 Committee met for the first time at Acting Chairman Dave Lester's house in suburban Denver May 23.
The group discussed possible hosting cities for the planned 2011 event, with Grand Junction and Glenwood Springs remaining the favorites. Other possible locations include Rifle, Canon City, Eagle/Gypsum, Durango, Buena Vista and Monument. Over the next seven weeks, cavers will look at the various possibilities for a host city and report back to the full committee at its next meeting on July 11.
I'm continuing to coordinate the Grand Junction host city bid, as I have become a supporter of the city as an excellent site for our Society's annual convention. I also am amazed at the continuing discovery of significant claystone caves in the immediate vicinity of the city.
Dave Lester's intent is to provide a formal bid to the NSS Board at either their November meeting in Virginia, or at their March 2007 meeting in Tucson. Dave provided a preliminary letter of interest at the Board's March 2006 meeting in Texas.
No matter the site in Colorado, our committee believes we can provide a truly exceptional convention for the Society that will provide caves and caving for those who are interested, as well as tremendous visitor attractions for the entire family. For the well-received 1996 Salida convention, our Colorado committee spent three years preparing for the event. Provided our 2011 bid is favorably received and accepted by the Board, we'll have five years to put together this convention.

Thanks for posting this update Rick. Mikie and I drove up to what turned into a very exciting meeting. The 96 convention was my first and I know this group can top our last convention, but it won't be an easy job. I'll be heading up the campground scene, with Mikie heading up the Madrat security task force scene. Finding the right city to host the event should prove interesting, with such a great list of communties to visit and talk to. Glenwood and Buena Vista would be my first two choices, but Grand Junction would not hurt my feeling. We will keep everyone updated as time goes along.

Sounds like things are coming together well for the Colorado bid! I noticed in the March BOG meeting minutes that the Vermont 2010 bid was accepted and that a Florida group had distributed a bid package for the 2008 NSS Convention to be held in northeast Florida. I believe the minutes mentioned formal consideration of this bid will take place at the 2006 Convention Board meeting in August. Amazing....we have a potential lineup of NSS Conventions thru 2011 (and did I hear vague whispers of WV for 2012?) looking something like this: 2006 - Washington 2007 - Indiana 2008 - Florida 2009 - Texas 2010 - Vermont 2011 - Colorado

In other news from the Convention Planning front lines, Floyd Collins posted a blurb on the Colorado Caving Forum that the 2008 Florida Convention bid has unfortunately run into a potential problem. The convention is tentatively scheduled for late August. Such a late date brought concern among some of the membership who have school-age children who would already be back in school at the time of the convention.
As an alternative, the Convention Planning committee mentioned something about the previously withdrawn Arkansas bid possibly being resurrected.
I would tend to agree with the concerns expressed. As more schools are extending their schedules, even the early August Convention dates are no longer suitable for families with children or teachers. This year's Washington Convention coincided with the start of the school year in the Southeastern states. I know many schools in Alabama and Tennessee returned to classes on August 7 this year. Guess it is something to take into consideration when planning for expected attendance figures. There doesn't seem to be any conflict with school dates for Conventions scheduled in the next few years at least. 2007 Marengo, Indiana from July 23 to 27 2008 2009 Kerrville, Texas from July 20 and 24 2010 Essex Junction, Vermont from July 12 to 17 2011 Colorado (preparing to propose bid) 2012 West Virginia (preparing to propose bid?)

I wish they would schedule more conventions for mid June. The schools are out, and the temps in hot places not so nasty yet.
